Avoid these common newsletter mistakes

If you are looking at creating and printing newsletters there is a certain way to go about the process. Newsletters are much like any other form of media in that there are certain rules that need to be followed. South Africans are used to receiving news in “bite size” pieces, so it’s important to make your newsletters exciting and easy to read at the same time.
Besides writing relevant content and avoiding too much in-your-face marketing, there are a few pitfalls you should try to avoid.
Things to avoid
- Over the top headlines. It is very important that you stay far away from long phrases and complicated headlines that aren’t attention-grabbing. Keep it simple, bold and catchy.
- Too much text. Newsletters that are too jam packed with text will end up putting off your readers. Use your space widely and try to use at least one image or graphic per page.
- Borders. This tends to make your page look cramped and cluttered as opposed to neat and structured. Try to include regular sections in your newsletters.
- Too much colour. Aside from adding to your printing costs, too much colour will make your newsletters look too festive which may distract from your content and overall message. Use colour sparingly – keep it simple yet upbeat.
- Underlining. Don’t use underlining to create emphasis – especially in headers and titles as it tends to cut off letters like ‘y’ and ‘g’. Use bold to create emphasis instead.
Newsletters are considered a dead form of media lately, but if done in the correct way and seasoned with interesting articles and pictures, newsletters can be used in a very effective way to reach people on a personal level.
