Printing processes
In general, there are four basic printing processes which you can use to print your CD inserts and booklets. These are digital, litho, laser and inkjet printing.
- Digital printing: With digital printing, images are created from a digital source. Digital printing machines typically consist of small to medium format printing presses which are regulated by a computer. Unless you are printing a small batch of material, digital printing is not recommended. The running costs of digital printing are high, making it less than ideal when mass producing CD inserts and booklets.
- Laser printing: Laser printing produces good quality at lower costs compared to digital and litho printing. Colour laser printers are quite common at print and computer shops. The biggest problem with laser printers is that they don’t print well on glossy surfaces. This is due to the heat generated by these printers which tends to create burn marks which manifests as tiny grooves on the paper (this is not a problem when printing on matte or satin paper).
- Inkjet printing: Inkjet printers generally produce high quality prints. However they are slow, their cartridges are very expensive and finding compatible paper for your CD inserts or booklets will be difficult. This is definitely not a viable option for creating high volume and quality CD art material.
- Litho printing: Litho printing produces much higher quality prints than the other printing processes. This type of printing is favoured by professionals and is the number one choice for printing magazines, textbooks, newspaper and postcards. Although its initial set-up costs are high, the price goes down as the volume increases. It is the best choice for creating CD inserts and booklets in high volumes.
