How long in advance should you send out wedding invitations?

Wedding invitations should be right at the top of your check-list when planning your wedding. Brides often find the whole invitation planning and distribution process very stressful and they tend to worry about everything that can go wrong (such as people not receiving their invites or guests who forget to RSVP for the big day).

One of the reasons why you have to give guests a fair amount of time to RSVP is because they often need to make travel and accommodation arrangements to attend the event. On the other hand, the bride needs to know exactly who will be attending well in advance because everything from the catering and table placements to the drinks and “thank you” notes are influenced by these numbers.

Some say invitations should be sent at least eight weeks before the wedding, while others feel that six weeks is sufficient. Many brides, however, send out their invitations three months in advance so that RSVP’s can be handled before they have to pay venue and catering deposits.

Guide for sending out wedding invitations

  • Medium: If you are mailing your wedding invitations through the post office, take the “snail mail” timelines into account – especially if you are sending the invites overseas. If you are using e-mail, you know that your guests will receive the invitations immediately. You can use snail mail as well as e-mail, but most brides prefer posting the physical invitation and then sending a follow-up e-mail message to make sure everyone received the invite.
  • RSVP date: The RSVP date should be at least 2-3 weeks before the wedding so that the guest list can be finalised for the caterer and place card printing.
  • Save-the-date: Another option is to send out save-the-date notifications as early as possible; this allows you to spend more time on the invitations.
  • RSVP-options: It is proper etiquette to give guests different options to confirm their attendance, e.g. a cell phone number they can call and an e-mail address.
