How to address wedding invitations

November 22, 2011 · Print This Article

While addressing wedding invitations may seem like the easy part of the entire wedding invite process, the truth is that it can be very time-consuming and frustrating. What makes the process so difficult is the fact that many people on your guest list aren’t close friends, making it hard to determine how each guest would want to be addressed. Is the person still married? Does your divorced aunt still use her married name or has she switched to her maiden name? Do you include adult cousins on the invitation to your uncle and aunt or do they get separate invitations?

While there are many variables that will influence how you choose to address your wedding invitations, remember that it’s etiquette to avoid using abbreviations (except in titles) and it’s always better to sound more formal than too informal. Here’s a quick guide on how to address invitations to your guests:

  • Inviting a single guest: Kate Bishop/Ms/Mss Kate Bishop, 123 Street Name Street/Avenue, City/Town, State/Province, Zip or Postal Code.
  • Inviting a single guest with children: Kate Bishop/Ms/Mss Kate Bishop and Family, 123 Street Name Street/Avenue, City/Town, State/Province, Zip or Postal Code.
