How to source established content for newsletters

March 27, 2012 · Print This Article

It may be a struggle to develop new and interesting content on a monthly basis for newsletters but there is a wealth of material that can be sourced and used to pump up this simple but effective soft marketing tool.

Most companies have a treasure trove of information that can be used to create informative and interesting articles on a regular basis. The first place to look is in newsletters archives – go back through past issues and making a note of which articles generated the most amount of traffic or interest.

After combing through the database, make a list of what could be rehashed in a new and fresh way, possibly taking into account new industry developments or changes in legislation that affect the issues mentioned in the articles.

Some past articles could be linked to others, providing new life to existing content. Look at the frequently asked questions that clients have posed and consider creating an article based on replies and comments on the FAQ’s.

In addition to using existing articles to create great content every month, use the simple tips below to pump up the effectiveness of the newsletters:

  • Use a great title and article headline – choose something that ties in with what the company does. For example a garden service could use ‘The Vine’ and a lawyer could use ‘The Brief’. Use punchy titles for the articles but avoid being sensationalist.
  • Keep it simple – don’t overwhelm the reader with reams of text and no graphics, use simple language and don’t go overboard with acronyms and fancy jargon.
  • Use a call to action – be subtle and avoid excessive sales propaganda. Use links for more information or get the reader to share the information with others.

Great content will draw the reader in and will make the most of this marketing tool, creating brand awareness and generating sales leads whilst providing useful information in an easy to use format. Superbly crafted newsletters will create a great impression in the mind of staff and customers.
